Workshop hours are as follows:

8:30am- 9:00am - Registration
9:00am – 4:00pm – Workshop
12:00pm -1:00pm - Lunch break (lunch is not provided)

These workshops are designed to provide effective strategies to professionals, parents and specialists working with these children. Participants will gain knowledge on many different topics including how to teach skills in the natural environment, how to design and implement programs using the ABLLS-R, and how to teach higher level language learners.

Registration is accepted on a first come first serve basis. Seating is limited.

Tuesday, August 4, 2009: Solutions to Challenging Tasks! A Framework for Classroom and Home Program Management from Start to Finish
Presenter: Holli Henningsen, MA, BCBA

This workshop is designed for parents and educators who are struggling to start up and manage an ABA program in the classroom or home. Participants will be able to locate resources to guide them, learn how to get started with a classroom and home program, specify essential information to be included in a program binder, and how to manage a data collection system.

Wednesday, August 5, 2009: Introduction to the ABLLSTM-R/ WebABLLS
Presenter: Carmen Martin, MS

This workshop is highly recommended for educators, parents and professionals who would like introductory information on the ABLLSTM-R and have not had extensive experience with this assessment. Participants will be able to identify essential skills to score and interpret the ABLLSTM-R, perform skill analyses to determine a child’s strengths and weaknesses, utilize assessment results for evaluating priorities, determining IEP objectives, and developing curricula.

Thursday, August 6, 2009: The Power of Positive Facilitation (for Teacher’s Assistants, Aides, Parents, and Caregivers)

This workshop is for tutors, classroom aides, educators, parents, and family members interacting with children with autism on a regular basis. Participants will be able to identify Autism Spectrum Disorders, specify elements to motivate learners, identify teaching procedures to shape behaviors, and learn how to teach in the natural environment.

Friday, August 7, 2009: Introduction to Behavior and Functional Behavior Assessments
Presenter: Carmen Martin, MS

This workshop is for parents and educators struggling with problem behaviors in the home and classroom. Participants will be able to identify basic behavioral principles used to analyze behavior, learn how to observe behaviors, learn how to increase appropriate behavior, and learn how to use simple data collection.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday- August 10-12, 2009: Teaching Language to Children with Autism and other Developmental Disabilities
Presenter: Holli Henningsen, MA, BCBA and Melissa Brown

This workshop is designed for parents, educators, tutors, and aides working with children with autism in an ABA and/or verbal behavior program. Participants will be able to identify examples of verbal operants, identify methods for developing and maintaining motivation, identify effective data collection, and how to teach children both in the classroom and in the natural environment.

Thursday, August 13, 2009: Teaching Advanced Verbal Behavior (CEUs available)

This workshop is designed for parents and educators with children who have acquired basic language skills (requesting & labeling), but who have not acquired more advanced language. Friday, August 14, 2009: Beyond the ABLLS-RTM-Models for Inclusion (CEUs available)

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Vincent J. Carbone, Ed.D, BCBA may have been many parents intro to the use of Skinner's Analysis of Verbal Behavior in their children's behavior analytic programming, and that one reason might be is that Dr. Carbone is an exceptional public speaker who makes the technical understandable, and even enjoyable.

Dr. Vincent J. Carbone is a board-certified behavior analyst with more than thirty years of experience in designing learning environments for persons with autism and development disabilities. He received his graduate training in applied behavior analysis from Drake University. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at Penn State and the Florida Institute of Technology and is currently visiting professor in the doctoral program in behavioral education at Simmons College . His teaching responsibilities include courses in applied behavior analysis and verbal behavior. His behavior-analytic research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Carbone serves on the editorial boards of several behavior-analytic journals, including Behavior Analysis in Practice. He also directs a clinic for children with autism in New York .

Mark L. Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA

Received his doctorate degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Western Michigan University (1980), under the direction of Dr. Jack Michael.

Dr. Sundberg is the co-author of the books Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities , The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills: The ABLLS, A Collection of Reprints on Verbal Behavior, and The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (The VB-MAPP) . He has published over 45 professional papers, including a recent chapter titled “Verbal Behavior” in the new edition of Cooper, Heron, & Heward’s (2007) book Applied Behavior Analysis, 2e [Part X, Chapter 25.].

He is the founder and past editor of the journal The Analysis of Verbal Behavior , given over 450 conference presentations and workshops nationally and internationally, and has taught 80 college courses on behavior analysis, verbal behavior, sign language, and child development.

He currently conducts research and consults to schools and programs in the San Francisco Bay area.

Our Presenter: Dr. Rebecca MacDonald, Ph.D., BCBA

In this session she will present procedures for teaching thematic pretend play using video modeling. Dr. MacDonald will review a play curriculum sequence and strategies for generating novel play in children with autism. As well also describe how to develop play scripts, video tape play models and teach using video modeling.

Play is an important part of a typical child's development and contributes to the acquisition of language and social interaction skills. Children with autism often do not develop play skills. Video modeling has been demonstrated to be an effective procedure to teach a variety of skills. We will review several studies that we have conducted demonstrating the effectiveness of video modeling teaching procedures to teach independent pretend play to children with autism, as well as to teach cooperative play between children with autism and typically developing peers. In addition, we will present data from our most recent work, teaching children to generate novel play using video modeling. Video modeling is now an integral part of our preschool social skills and play curriculum. In this workshop, we will review how to develop scripts using commercially available play sets, create video modeling tapes, and provide video instruction to children with autism. We will also discuss the advantages of this teaching procedure and the technical issues encountered when implementing the procedures. We will also discuss the implications for this technology as an easy and effective strategy for teachers and parents to use to teach play and other skills.

Educational Objectives:
1.Describe procedures for teaching play using video modeling.
2.Describe strategies to generate novel play using video modeling.
3.Describe how to create new individualized play scripts.
